The first Cycling Club in Lancaster was the ‘Vale of Lune Bicycle Club’ founded in 1879 but disbanded in 1882. After a few years the first ‘Lancaster Cycling Club’ was formed in 1887. The Captain ofis club for all bar the first few months of its existence until it was also disbanded was Mr. Sam Dawson and he wrote an excellent evocative book entitled ‘Incidents in the Course of a Long Cycling Career’. (Right-click here to download the 5.2Mb PDF file of the book) The present Lancaster Cycling Club was founded back in 1924 and membership varies from year to year but is usually in the 50's to 60's. Members ages range from early teens to well past retirement age.
