Denny Beck to Kirby Lonsdale (L257)

Lune Valley 25mile TT course

Course description:

Start on A683 approximately 1/4 mile east of Dennybeck at last kerbstone on north side of road 50 yards east of lay-by on opposite side of road. Proceed along A683 through Caton and Hornby to Greta Bridge, junction of A683 and A687 (M). Bear left onto A683 and continue through Tunstall and Burrow to turn at a point 52 yards north of electricity supply pole no. KLB21, 788 yards south of junction with A65. The turn is marked '2T5' (M). Turn and retrace on A683 via Greta Bridge, Hornby and Caton to finish at P (Parking) sign at east end of lay-by and 75 yards Lancaster side of the start.

Instructions to riders:

1.      Riders must give their number at the finish and elsewhere on the course if requested.

2.      Riders must NOT STAND in the road at the start or finish. (This constitutes obstruction and is a breach of Regulations).

3.      Riders must NOT ride with their heads down.

4.      Riders must NOT STOP on the road after passing the Finish timekeeper. (No times will be given to either riders or supporters at the Finish.)

The following Local Regulations have been approved by the National Committee in accordance with Regulation 38. Any breaches may lead to disciplinary action.

Local Reg No 5. In ALL events, competitors prior to starting are not permitted to ride past the finish timekeeper during the duration of the event.

Local Reg No 6. Any competitor making a 'U' turn in the vicinity of the start or finish will be disqualified from the event.

A full copy of the Risk Assessment is on display at event HQ. Riders should note that they need to take particular care at the following points on the course:

a)      Several of the villages on the route have rumble strips at the entrance and exit to the village. These may be elevated and also can be hazardous in wet conditions.

b)      The descent and returning ascent through wooded area near Scarthwaite caravan park includes rumble strips and two deceptively tight bends. These can be hazardous in wet conditions. Riders should take GREAT CARE not to take the turns too wide relative to oncoming traffic.

c)      In the centre of Caton Village, on both the outward and homeward legs, give way to traffic already on the mini roundabout and do not ‘cut’ the central area which may be hazardous in wet conditions. Give way to pedestrians using the pedestrian crossing.

d)      On the brow of the hill beyond Farleton on the A683, there is a small risk of standing traffic waiting to turn right onto the road to Wray. This junction also needs to be approached with care on the return leg of the course.

e)      On the outward leg, there is a sharp left turn in the road at Hornby, with possible traffic joining from the right from the minor road from Wray. Riders should take GREAT CARE not to take the turn too wide relative to oncoming traffic. This instruction also applies to the sharp right turn at this point on the return leg.

f)        The turn at Greta Bridge should be taken with GREAT CARE. This is a sharp turn and it is easy at speed to take the turn wide, crossing the white line into the oncoming lane and possible traffic. A marshal will be positioned at the turn and will report competitors who ride without due care and attention at this point.

g)      Turn in Road at 12.5 miles. Riders are advised that there is limited visibility for traffic approaching from direction of Kirby Lonsdale and from behind (direction of Hornby). The road is also quite narrow at this point. A marshal is present to mark the turning point but the onus is on the riders to make a safe manoeuvre to negotiate the turn.

h)      In the vicinity of the Finish, be aware of spectators and traffic entering/leaving the lay-by.

In the interests of your own safety, Cycling Time Trials and the event promoters strongly advise you to wear a HARD SHELL HELMET that meets an internationally accepted safety standard. For Juvenile and Junior riders the wearing of such helmets is compulsory.

You are reminded that you must comply with traffic law and the Highway Code.

A590 Levens to Lindale & Back (L1015)

Course description:

START in lay-by on A590 approximately 500 yards south-west of junction with southbound A6 at the white mark on kerb edge which is 22 yards from the eastern end of the tarmac footpath and 33 yards east of an AA telephone point. This mark is directly in line with a wooden fence post with two angled supports in the hedge and almost in line with the most easterly of two ‘Please take your litter home’ signs. Proceed along the A590 in a south-westerly direction to encircle roundabout on Lindale by-pass (5.243 miles). Retrace along the A590 to FINISH in line with metal cover in northern grass verge embossed ‘Charlton Ironworks Sheffield’ which is approximately 12 yards east of large road sign on slip-road to the A6 approximately 90 yards short of junction of Levens Bridge/ Levens Village road (10MILES).

1.      Riders must be current members (first or second claim) of Lancaster CC.

2.      Riders must NOT cross the dual carriageway (A590) at any point.

3.      Riders must give their number at the Finish and elsewhere on the course if requested.

4.      Riders must NOT STAND in the road at the Start or Finish. (This constitutes obstruction and is a breach of Regulations).

5.      Riders must NOT ride with their heads down.

6.      Riders must NOT STOP on the slip road after passing the Finish timekeeper. (No times will be given at the Finish.)

Local Reg No 10; Course L101 and L1015 -- warming up on the course is not permitted during the duration of the event.

a)     At the Start, riders should be aware of fast approaching traffic.

b)     At the end of the first downhill stretch, the slip road joining on the left from the A6 has fast moving traffic. The marshal on this junction cannot direct the traffic.

c)      Riders encircle the Meathop roundabout. This involves entering the centre of the roundabout in front of passing traffic. There is also fast traffic entering this roundabout, particularly from the Lindale bypass. Marshals are present at the roundabout but the onus is on riders to make a safe manoeuvre.

d)     After finishing, riders must watch out for traffic when turning left at the end of the slip road to return to HQ.

Denny Beck to Farleton & Back (L102)

Course description:

Start on A683 approximately 80 yards east  of the Caton end of the Denny Beck layby at mark on kerbstone (grid ref SD 508643). Proceed along A683 in the direction of Hornby, through Caton and Claughton. Turn right into minor road to Farleton (Farleton Old Road) then filter left to rejoin A683 (M) (grid ref 574673). Retrace to finish at mark on kerbstone, approximately 60 yards west of the parking sign at the Lancaster end of the Denny Beck layby and about 100 yards before junction of A683 and minor road (Grimeshaw Lane) to Halton.

 1.      Riders must give their number at the finish and elsewhere on the course if requested.

2.      Riders must NOT STAND in the road at the Start or Finish. (This constitutes obstruction and is a breach of Regulations).

3.      Riders must NOT ride with their heads down.

c)      The turn MUST be executed in the following manner. Make a right turn into Farleton Old Road, with appropriate signalling as required for traffic approaching from behind and in front. Be aware that traffic is often fast moving on this stretch of the course. Give way to on-coming traffic as per the Highway Code. Note also that there is limited visibility for traffic emerging from Farleton Old Road. Filter left to rejoin the A683, giving way to traffic as necessary. Marshals are present at the turn but remember that the onus is on riders to make a safe manoeuvre.

d)      In the vicinity of the Finish and HQ, be aware of spectators and traffic entering/leaving the lay-by. Return to HQ to receive your time.

Salt Ayre Circuit

Salt Ayre Circuit

Closed Circuit Time Trial Course - 10 miles (12 and a half circuits)

Held under Cycling Time Trials Regulations

Seniors £3, Under 18s free.

Directions:

Salt Ayre Sports Centre, between Lancaster and Morecambe.

Drive into the Sports Centre, and continue past the buildings through to the car park at the rear. At the end of this car park, go right through a gate onto a parking area. If you are driving a large vehicle or carrying a bike on a roof rack, watch out for the height restriction here. Continue on foot through to HQ on the grassy area on the left, just near the edge of the circuit.

Course description:

Course is on a tarmac cycling circuit, generally good surface, but there may be some gravel on the bends.

Start at the path that bisects the circuit, adjacent to HQ. Start in a westerly direction to encircle the circuit anti-clockwise. Each lap is 0.8 miles.

Finish in an easterly direction opposite the path that bisects the circuit and the Start point.

Race Distances:

2 miles              2 and a half laps

6 miles              7 and a half laps

10 miles            12 and a half laps

Specify distance selected at Signing On. Shorter distances are offered principally for younger and novice riders.

Note: the maximum number of riders allowed is 40.

General Safety Points:

It is a condition of riding on the circuit that ALL riders wear a HARD SHELL HELMET that meets an internationally accepted safety standard.

a)      Riders must NOT ride with their heads down.

b)      Always ride in an anti-clockwise direction, keeping to the left and overtaking on the right

c)      Riders must NOT STAND on the circuit at the Start or Finish or anywhere else.

d)      Riders must NOT STOP on the circuit after passing the Finish timekeeper. (No times will be given to either riders or supporters at the Finish.)

e)      Always be alert for riders when crossing the circuit to get to or from the Start and Finish.

f)       Competitors may vary significantly in terms of age, speed, experience and expertise. Please be alert to these differences.


External hazards: Dogs, pedestrians, runners, balls etc may suddenly cross onto the cycle circuit.

Whilst there will be event warning signs at key access points, you need to be alert to this possibility at any place on the course.

Race Instructions and Other Warnings


1.      Warming Up – you may warm up on the circuit from 20 minutes before the first rider.

The circuit must be cleared before the first rider starts, after which time no warming up is permitted.

(Do not use the adjacent cycle path for warming up.)

2.      Line up to Start on the path or grass inside the circuit, not on the circuit itself.

The Start area will be demarcated by cones that extend onto the circuit.

Riders already racing must be alert for riders joining the circuit, and move out slightly to avoid the cones.

3.      Ride on the left-hand side of the circuit, moving out to the right to overtake slower riders.

4.      The circuit has tighter bends than you generally encounter on the road, particularly at the end of the straight after the Start.

Some riders may find it difficult to ride on tri-bars round these bends.

 5.      Take particular care if overtaking on a bend. Remember that the rider in front may move out on the approach, or drift wide on the exit.

 6.      Drafting is not permitted. If you catch another rider, you should pass as soon as possible or drop back.

We are relying on riders to police themselves, but marshals will be alert and monitoring this potential problem.

 7.      It is your responsibility to cover the correct distance. You should maintain your own lap count or monitor your distance using a cycle computer.

There may be a marshal to count your laps, but this is a back-up and to assist the timekeeper.

8.      As you cross the Finish line you should SHOUT your rider number clearly to inform the timekeeper that you are finishing.

 9.      After crossing the Finish line, continue to ride at a reasonable pace, keeping to the left, until you reach the Start area.

Stop and dismount with care. Do not continue riding on the circuit after you have finished racing.

Do not use the public cycle path to warm down.
